چکیده

K raft pulp is manufactured in the United States from nearly all commercially availble wood species. About 55 million tons per year are manufactured, 30 million of which are bleached and used mostly for printing and office papers and tissue products. Some kraft pulp is exported, and significant quantities are imported, mostly from Canada and South America. Pulps manufact'xed by sulfite, mechanical, and deinking processes are being used to a modest but increasing extent to replace bleached kraft pulp in certain markets. The manufaqure of bleached kraft pulp is a major but not dominant source of water pollution in the pulp and paper industry. With respect to pollution prevention measures, bleached kraft mills in the United States range from the best in the world to about average, compared with the other pulp producing countries. The characteristics of mill effluent discharged in this country are probably somewhat better than average, since 97 percent of our bleached kraft mills have secondary effluent treatment. In other pulp producing countries, from 50 to 100 percent of mills have secondary treatment. This paper discusses only the manufacture .of paper grade bleached kraft pulp, for market or for on-site use in an integrated paper mill. The International System of units (SI, Systeme International) is used throughout, unless otherwise noted. Environmentalists have focused their attention on the kraft pulp bleaching processes because so many of the most widely known, persistent pollutants discharged by the pulp and paper industry originate in that part of pulp manufacture. But the prebleaching pulping processes are also significant, andmany measures that reduce or prevent the formation of pollutants in the bleach plant are implemented upstream in the pulping operations.

Membrane Fouling Prevention and Control Strategies in Pulp and Paper Industry Applications: A Review

Membrane separation technologies have recently received much attention, from lab-scale studies to full-scale operations, in the forest industry. However, membrane fouling comprises a signifcant obstacle to their broad application. Thus, to ensure cost-effective operation of membrane separation processes, the improved elucidation of membrane fouling and establishment of e...

A multi-criteria decision analysis of management alternatives for anaerobically digested kraft pulp mill sludge

The Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) procedure was used to compare waste management options for kraft pulp mill sludge following its anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion of sludge is advantageous because it produces biogas that may be used to generate electricity, heat and biofuels. However, adequate management of the digested sludge is essential. Landfill disposal is a non-sustainab...

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

Measures taken against water pollution in the kraft pulp and paper industry.

Without reclamation of waste liquor and chemicals recovery, the kraft pulp and paper industry would constitute an enormous pollution problem. Already for economical reasons, substantial recovery is secured, however, and considerable further improvements are foreseen. Recovery is outlined in terms of cycles for sodium, calcium, sulphur, and—in a wider sense—carbon. In addition, the mechanical lo...
